All About Elephants!

You may remember that a while ago I made a book "All About Lions". I love it. The kids love it. And I learned a ton while making the book. So fun!

Well I just finished (finally!!) My "All About Elephants" book! I once again learned a TON. Elephants are really cool creatures!

I've had five people proof read it for me because I'm paranoid of mistakes since the last time I ordered I found a mistake moments after placing the order. I was able to cancel, fix and reorder but I really don't want to have to do that again! Anyways, feel free to proof it as you read because each person that has already proofed has found things that the person before missed.
Actually... if you truly understand when to use "it's" and "its" and can write it out in an explainable way I would be more than happy to have you guest blog that here on A Hearty Overflow. I just don't get it.

Ok. Here are some pages from the book!

I just love elephants!!

If you are interested in seeing the whole book you can view it at (You will have to download artscow's program silverlite to view. It only takes a moment and you should be prompted when you click the link.) is a GREAT place to make photo books! Deals ALL. THE. TIME!!! (I'll only be paying $9.50 total for my elephant book!)

I plan to make more photo books about the animals we see at the zoo and I will definitely be using artscow again!

Train Up Your Child: Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours!

Making Children Mind Without Losing Yours is a book by Dr. Kevin Leman and I LOVE IT!

There is so much practical, do-able parenting advice on it’s pages. It makes sense and I am certain that if done right it will work and work well.

It goes right along with what I have been talking about in training up your children. This book will help you learn practical ways to train them.

In the book Leman discusses the differences between using reward/punishment and using encouragement/discipline. He gives plenty of examples to help you understand how what he calls “reality discipline” works.

What is reality discipline? Letting reality BE the discipline. Children need to have the freedom to make choices and learn from reality.

Leman says “If ‘punishment,’ pain, or some kind of consequence is involved, the parent is not doing it or causing it--reality is. Your child is learning how the real world works.”

This book is absolutely spectacular. You should get it and read it!

We've actually been applying the things I learned is this book for a while now. It's teaching the kids how to take responsibility for their actions and think things through. They are learning about positive and negative consequences. This book has brought about some really great changes in our house.

And one more note about the book... I've been looking for a way to start using an allowance but I always hated the idea of paying kids to do something that they should be doing simply because they are a part of the family. Making Kids Mind Without Losing Yours has my answer! It gives great advice on how to use an allowance.

I've read a lot of parenting books and this has by far been my favorite. I'll be recommending it like I recommend Babywise!  I'll  also be doing a giveaway real soon where the lucky winner will receive a copy of this book!

Scavenger Hunt Sunday

I'm linking up again with Scavenger Hunt Sunday. This weeks items are Macro/Close Up, Found Texture, Home, Cover and The Tree.

Macro/Up Close

Macro/Up close is kind of new to me so this is the best I could come up with this week. I thought it was neat how the leaf was lined in frost.

Found Texture
IMG_7502 copy
This is made from coffee beans I think.

I saw a quote earlier this week that said "Home is where my husband is." I liked it... but it's also where my children are. As long as I have my family I am home. So I bribed my kids with tootsie rolls and used that wonderful thing called the self-timer.

We got our first snow yesterday! When the snow covers the ground we cover our heads with awesome hats made by me!

The Tree
IMG_7655 1
I always see this tree as I drive down the road. One morning I noticed how much color it had while still having most of it's leaves. The next morning was foggy and I decided it was a good time to get the pic and made my family sit in the car waiting for me. They are getting used to that.

It went something like this...

Liza and Jason were having another little fight... over a stuffed animal or something.

Liza told Jason she was never going to play with him again.

Jason crossed his arms and said "FINE!"

Then we all shouted fine back and forth for a while. It was pretty funny.

And then Jason hit Liza.

He knows that when he hits he has to go in his bed so I reminded him of that to which he replied "It was an accident."

He always says it was an accident... wind up and all. It makes me laugh.

And then he said he didn't want to go to his bed.

I told him that if he didn't go I would have to take his polar bear away. I told him "Go to your bed and think about it."

Liza put her hand on her hip and said "Go to your bed and think about what you just did!" with a whole lot of attitude.

Jason stomped off to his room saying "I'M NOT GONNA THINK ABOUT IT!"

I was trying not to laugh.

Then he started rawring and saying something about the snakes are gonna come get us and eat us and "the snakes are my fwiends!"

And then this followed...

Liza: I'm never gonna play with you again!
Jason: I'm never gonna play with YOU again!
Liza: I'm never gonna play with YOU again!
Jason: I'm never gonna play with YOU again!
Liza: Ok. I'll play with you. Mom can he come out of his room now?

This is my life.

It's often entertaining.

Don't forget to laugh when things go a little crazy. :)

Make some Playdough!

I saw a recipe for making your own playdough on Pinterest and not too long ago we had a day with all of us home and nothing to do so we made it.

It's super easy. The kids were able to help. And we had a great time together!

IMG_6748 1

1 cup flour
1 cup water
1/4 cup salt
2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 Tbls. vegetable oil
food coloring (4 or 5 drops is plenty)

IMG_6751 1

Put all the ingredients in a pot and stir.
IMG_6752 1

Put it on the stove over medium heat and stir constantly until it forms into a ball.
IMG_6758 1

Once it's a big blog dump it on your counter and let it cool. Once it's cool knead it for a bit until smooth and well blended.
IMG_6760 1

And then have fun playing!!
IMG_6762 1

We made four batches to get the four colors. It does take a little bit of time but it really was a fun time and the kids thought it was super cool to make their own playdough.
So now you have something do to today with the kids if you are looking out your window and seeing that white stuff like I am. Hooray for snow! I love it!

(I originally found the recipe here.)

My Little Fire Fighters

About two weeks ago at the kids "school" they had special visitors.

That's always an exciting day at school when the fire fighters visit and talk to the kids about fire safety and all that and then the kids get to check out the truck. And they always come home with their very own fire fighter hats.

And they get left all over the house for weeks or months until I get tired of picking them up and secretly throw them away while no one is watching.

The other day Liza and Jason got their hats and fire trucks out and actually let me take a few pictures.

(Note: I know that the pics are a little fuzzy but the kids are still adorable and fun. :))

This first one cracks me up... they just look so thrilled don't they?

IMG_6670 1

They really were having a lot of fun and giggling like crazy and playing nice together. Promise!

And that's how we have fun in this house.
Hooray to the true heroes... the real fire fighters. I could never do what they do.

On a completely separate note- I was profiled on my friend Lindsey's blog today. She has a great blog and you should check it out. Especially if you are new around here and want to know a little bit more about me. :)

Train Up Your Child: Demonstrate Good Choices

You didn’t think that I would possibly leave the actions of the parents out of this one did you? I mean I could only talk to the kids about making good choices for so long before my own bad choices became glaringly obvious.

I am constantly thinking now about my decisions. If my kids are acting up and I get angry and yell was that a good decision or a bad one?

If something happens and I let it rule my mood and emotions is that a good choice or a bad choice?

How many choices do I make in a day?!!?

Am I giving my children opportunities to make choices?

Choices! Choices! Choices!

Honestly… there have been days where I say to Mike “If I have to talk about choices one more time!” It’s tough! I often sound like a broken record. But my kids don’t fully have it down yet so I can’t stop.

Anyways… back to me.

I need to be modeling good choices to my kids. I won’t always get it right and I think it is important that when I get it wrong I apologize for making a bad/poor choice and talk to them about it.

Not only have I been changing how I discipline, but as a result of the changes in discipline I am changing the way I live.

And it’s been good.

Give it a try with your kids. It could change your whole family!

What's New with Wix-Works

You guys!!!

I seriously am in awe of how my hobby has taken off. And I fully believe a lot of it had to do with divine timing. Someday I'll share more details. :)

I wanted to show you some things that are new at Wix-Works since the last time I posted... just because I think they are awesome and I want to show you my cool work.

Ok... this first hat is not actually for sale because of trademark legal stuff and all that but I just LOVE it so much. I made it as a favor for a friend.

This girly monster hat rocks!!
IMG_6096 1

I'm now making sock monkey hats in all sizes but these next two were made for babies. OH MY GOSH!!! I hope the people who bought them send in photos because I want to see them on a head!!

IMG_7607 copy

Owls are definitely in right now.

It's football season!!

Monster hats are still one of my most popular items.

And my most recent hat is the snowflake one.

I've also just added in my barrettes that I actually started selling last year. The flowers can be made in several different colors and three different sizes.

And new to Wix-Works are these cute little bow barrettes...

Super cute!!
IMG_7625 copy

And lastly, I've added an album with already made headbands that are ready for purchase.

I've been crocheting my fingers off due to constant orders. People are starting to order Christmas gifts now and the orders coming in are for several hats at a time. I have a feeling I'm going to be busy for a while. :) I'm ok with that!
You can check out Wix-Works on Facebook if you want more details!

Train Up Your Child: More on Choices

Here is another example where we have been able to teach our kids about choices. It is more about their emotions and whether or not they let silly things rule how they feel.

Jason will often say something like “Are we going somewhere today?” When I tell him no he will then say “But that won’t make me happy.”

Seriously! This kid kills me! It’s sooo cute how he says it but what a great opportunity to teach him something.

This is how I like to respond:

“I’m sorry that we don’t have somewhere to go today. It’s fun to go places but some days it’s good to just stay at home. I hope you choose to be happy anyway today.”

And you know what? He GETS it! He really does. Sometimes he’s so funny because he’ll go “Oh! I am going to be happy!” And then he does a big, forced, cheesy smile. But he IS choosing to be happy and not let whether or not we go somewhere affect his mood.

Good choices make life better!

Rails to Trails

My friend Kim was always talking about how she and her kids would hit the rails to trails in the mornings. I had no idea where it was but one morning I needed something to do so we got together and took the kids. FUN!

It was a beautiful fall morning and we just enjoyed nature and each others company.

IMG_6478 1

You will never come across Liza on a hike without flowers, leaves, rocks or some other "treasure" in her hands. She's obsessed.

Three very silly kids...

IMG_6443 copy

There was lots of running... by the kids. I don't run.
IMG_6452 1

Jason was yelling "c'mon Yiza!"

I am in love with Jason's current on demand smile...

And these faces make my  heart so happy...

I love that Kim and I have become such good friends! We met at the gym quite a while ago and these days we see each other outside of the gym much more than we see each other inside of it. Good thing too since I'm canceling my membership.

And I'm so glad that I finally know where the rails to trails is! The kids and I took Mike the other day. It's a great way to get some family time together.
