A while ago Mike hit a deer. He is fine. The car is still drivable. All is good.
We have used this lesson to teach the kids about crossing the road. We now say "Look both ways so we don't end up like that deer!" We don't say this to make them afraid. We say it to make them aware. Wise. To help them understand there is danger.
I was sharing this story with a friend and she shared back about her story of how someone told her child something about crossing the road and she said "I don't want her to be afraid to cross the road!" To that another person responded "A little bit of fear is a good thing."
No it's not!
Fear is not good!
Fear limits us. Holds us back. Keeps us from living life in a free way.
Fear - a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid.
Synonyms: foreboding, apprehension, consternation, dismay, dread, terror, fright, panic, horror, trepidation, qualm. (Eww! I don't like any of those feelings and I have to say that none of them are a good thing!)
Antonyms: courage, security, calm, intrepidity.
While reading Nurture by Lisa Bevere I read a paragraph on fear. I liked it. I'm going to share it now...
"Understand that fear will ultimately make you do things you would never dream of doing, say things you would never dream of saying, listen to things you should never give ear to. Fear will cause you to view things in such a twisted manner that you lose all healthy sense of perspective. Then you will doubt what you should trust and trust what you should doubt. Fear is insidious, and if there was only one thing I could impart to each and every woman today, it would be an empowerment to live fearlessly."
Fearless - without fear; bold or brave.
Lisa also says that "fear is never a good counselor." Don't listen to it!
How many things have you put off doing or turned down because of fear? How has fear limited you in the past? Will you refuse to let it limit you in the future?
Live fearlessly! God is on your side! He has great plans for you... not always easy but you are more than a conqueror!
